My Favorite Safer Beauty Swaps

June 14, 2019

We all buy and use personal care products, but how often do we pause to think about whether or not the products we are using on ourselves are safe? I sure didn't until recently, and I wish someone would've educated me sooner!

A few quick facts before I share my favorite products:

~~80% of cosmetics have never been tested for safety.

~~The last time congress passed a law regarding cosmetics was in 1938.

~~About 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed right into our bloodstream.

So, how do you choose safer products for you and your family? There are a couple of apps to help you make that decision.

The EWG app (The Environmental Working Group) is a non-profit that can help you do your homework. This website has a database of many of the products we use and generates a safety rating to help consumers make educated choices.

The Think Dirty app is also great to scan barcodes on products while shopping.  Just be sure to double check with the EWG app, because this app still has a few flaws there need to work out.

With all that being said, I've already done the work for you, so here are some of my favorite safer beauty swaps.

All products are linked as well.

1. Wrinkle, Age Spot, Acne Scaring, and Skin Smoothing Serum

                                                                    {Overnight Resurfacing Peel}

The Resurfacing Peel is magic. It helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, acne scars, pores, and fine lines without irritation or over-drying.
It's way safer for you and your skin than retinol, but works just as good!

What exactly is a resurfacing peel?

*Chemical exfoliant made of both AHA & BHA
*Formulated with 15 botanically derived acids
* Improves skin texture and minimizes the appearance of pores, fine lines, and dark spots
* Glycolic, lactic, and malic acids break down the bond of dead skin cells so they can be removed from the skin
* Hyaluronic acid and essential fatty acids soothe and nourish to reveal a brighter, more youthful-looking complexion.

I promise you will see more results in just one night from this product than anything else you’ve tried!

2. Concealer

Concealer is a must around here, especially on those mornings my kiddos decide to get up earlier than normal, or my face is freaking out because well, you know, hormones.

I love this concealer because it is also an under eye brightener for dark under eye circles.

3. Liquid Foundation

 {Liquid Foundation}

I was never a liquid foundation girl until I found this product. I love that it has a buildable coverage--one application for every day wear, or 2 for a night out or special event. If you need help color matching for yourself, let me know!

4. Mascara

If you've known me long enough, you know I am a mascara snob. When I switched to safer beauty, mascara was the one thing that took a long time to switch because I couldn't find one that I liked. Enter this Volumizing Mascara. I finally found a product that works, and is safe for me.

5. Tinted SPF Moisturizer

{SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer}

SPF is so important, especially in the summer months when we are outdoors more often. We need to protect our skin from the harsh UVA/UVB rays with sunscreen, but I like to have a little color as well. The Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer is just sheer enough for the beach, but thick enough to cover any blemishes.

6. Lip Stick/ Sheer Lip Stick

     {Lip Stick} | {Lip Sheer} | {My Favorite Color Lip Sheer}

If you're a full color lipstick girl you'll love the variety of colors with the Lip Stick, but if you're like me and like a more sheer coverage, you're going to love the Lip Sheer. It smells so heavenly, it's creamy, and such good quality. The color Terra is my absolute favorite!

Honorable Mentions:

Have you ever thought about the ingredients in your sunscreen? Or what chemicals you might be ingesting when spraying sunscreen on your children? I didn't give it much thought until I learned how harmful the ingredients are in the typical sunscreen. Yikes!

These sunscreens are safer with no toxic chemicals to ensure there is no potential risk of respiration when sprayed and it does not enter the blood stream to cause harmful effects to the body.

Self Tanner:

Sometimes we just want a little color without actually going into the sun, but self tanners are loaded with toxic, harmful chemicals. Beauty by Earth is a much safer sunless tanner, and it actually works.

Pressed Powder:

I'm a former MAC cosmetics addict, but after learning all the chemicals that were in there products, I knew I had to make a switch. This pressed powder by W3ll People covers great, and is safe.
